Shenandoah Valley Pickleball

Rule of the Month

The scenario: Your opponent drives a shot that lands clearly past the baseline. You let it go. The ball bounces off the fence, and your partner immediately calls it out.

Why it counts

Because nobody returned the ball, a prompt “out” call is recognized even after the ball has become dead:

“If a player returns the ball, their ‘out’ call must be made before the ball is hit by the opponent or before the ball becomes dead; otherwise, play continues. If a player does not return the ball, an ‘out’ call made promptly will be recognized, even if the ball becomes dead before the ‘out’ call is made.”

The distinction is what matters. Return the ball and the clock is strict—your call has to come before your opponent hits it or before the ball dies. Let it go, and a prompt call stands.

New for 2026. The old rule let a player who didn’t return the ball wait all the way until the next serve. USA Pickleball tightened it, and the reasoning was blunt: “There is no legitimate reason for a player to delay making an out call.”

The operative word in the new rule is promptly. It is not a license to wait and see how the rally would have turned out.
